CHRISTCHURCH TO CELEBRATE WORLD PARKS DAY
Christchurch will join cities all over the world next week to celebrate green spaces as part of World Parks Day. To mark the occasion, the Council has teamed up with Trees for Canterbury to hold a special tree planting day at Travis Wetland Reserve on Saturday 19th September from 10:30am to 12:30pm. World Parks Day allows us to highlight the importance and appreciate the wonderful collection of parks, gardens and green spaces that surround us here in Christchurch.
Trees for Canterbury is working with Council to celebrate this great event which will also mark the 600,000th plant donated to the community, as part of the ambitious project to establish a six to eight-hectare Totara-matai-kahikatea forest within Travis Wetland.
Trees for Canterbury Manager, Steve Bush says coinciding the planting day with World Parks Day is a great way to acknowledge the importance of parks and green space in the community and involving the public in the special day. Mayor Bob Parker will attend the planting at Travis Wetland which will be followed by a BBQ lunch.
If you would like to be part of creating the new totara/matai forest, then come along at 10am (meet in Beach Road car park) with gumboots, gloves, water, etc. If the event is going to be cancelled, notification will be advised on Newstalk ZB.
The Travis Wetland Trust has won the 2009 Green Ribbon Award for Urban Sustainability.
The Award was awarded to the Trust for its outstanding efforts to preserve and develop a wetland as a nature park in an urban area.
