World Wetlands Day, Saturday Febuary 2nd 2019

Meet at the education center (the old farm house) behind the Beach Rd car park at 10 am.

On Saturday 2 February Travis Wetland Trust will celebrate World Wetlands Day 2019 with a guided walk to our rapidly expanding Tōtara/Mataī forest at the southern end of the wetland followed by a BBQ at the Education Centre. The walk starts at 10am from the Ed Centre and will be a gentle introduction to the site of much of the Trust’s planting work over the past decade. Some of the older trees are now getting quite tall and the canopy is showing signs of closing and suppressing the introduced grasses. This is when the forest begins to become self sustaining and the carbon sequestration starts to take off. While the walk will be at a relaxed pace it can be very wet in places and gumboots are advisable.
