World Wetlands Day, February 2, 2020, 10am

World Wetlands Day

2 February each year is World Wetlands Day to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

This year we will be meeting at the Education Center at 10am for a guided walk followed by morning tea.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2020 is “Wetland Biodiversity Matters”. Come along and see how over the past two decades a soggy cow paddock has been transformed back into a biodiverse wetland and the nucleus of a Mataī / Tōtara forest. The Travis Wetland Trust and Christchurch City Council are working to turn the clock at Ōruapaeroa/Travis Wetland back 200 years to how the local environment appeared when Europeans arrived with an appetite for cow’s milk.
